Small friends, big benefits

A few facts about you and your small dog

When you own a small dog, you can be sure all the love and companionship you show them will be eagerly and warmly returned. But here are a few things you might not know... like why small dogs in particular can be quite such special company.

Dogs are good news!

More and more scientists are getting wise to the fact that pets are good for you. Research increasingly shows that – among other things – interacting with pets can:

  • Cut down the number of times you visit your doctor
  • Reduce stress levels and blood pressure
  • Boost the school attendance rates for those children who own a pet
  • Provide companionship
  • Speed up your recovery from illness

Small is beautiful

Small dogs make great lapdogs, are easy to take to places, and they need less food. They’re perfect if you’re short on space, or need a breed that’s more manageable. And if, like some owners, you let them share your bed, you’ll still have plenty of room to stretch out!

The ‘big’ small choice

A Jack Russel

There’s small, and there’s tiny! Which is right for you? It’s worth checking out breeds to be sure of the perfect fit. ‘Small’ dogs weigh between 5 to 10kg – like Jack Russells, Shih-tzus, Dachshunds, miniature Schnauzers, Shetland sheepdogs and, of course, Westies. ‘Toy’ dogs weigh even less, and include breeds such as miniature Dachshunds, Chihuahuas, the Pomeranian, and of course, Yorkshire and Maltese terriers.

Keeping active

Whatever size dog you choose, remember – they need lots of exercise and companionship. All dogs love to go on walks and smell things along the way. But whilst large dogs tend to need a longer walk or run to stay fit, most small dogs are content with a short one.

Keep the doctor at bay!

A survey of more than 11,000 Australians, Chinese and Germans proved pet owners enjoy better levels of health. In five years, they made 15-20% fewer annual visits to the doctor than non pet-owners*.
